An extremely variable species with a widespread distribution ranging from the Himalayas in northeastern India through China to the Philippines. This species has many forms, with the most attractive being the non-suckering type, which resembles a dwarf P. canariensis. Found at an altitude of 1700 m (5600 ft.), it is a very robust species that will thrive in temperate or tropical climates and will tolerate quite hard frosts.
