Chamaedorea Talk by Donald Hodel at Leu Gardens - Sunday July 20th

Noted author Donald Hodel will give a presentation What's New in Chamaedorea? at Leu Gardens on Saturday, July 20th. His appearance is co-sponsored by CFPACS and Leu Gardens. This will take place in the Orchid Room of the Garden House, at 1:30. Hodel's talk is free and open to the public.

Seed Bank Public Sale Going on NOW!!! - Seed list updated 4/18/2008

CFPACS has decided to sell excess seeds from the seed bank to the general public. You don't have to be a member to purchase seeds in a public seed offering. Please go to the Public Sales page of the Seed Bank website area and look at what is available. Ordering instructions are at the bottom of the page.

2008 CFPACS Hometwon Grant Available

The CFPACS Hometown Grant is a $500 grant awarded to a member in good standing who desires to plant palms and cycads in his or her own home town. It's a great way to improve the landscape of your favorite public place while at the same time show people in your community how much beauty palms and cycads can bring to the environment.

Central Area Spring Meeting Recap (March 8)

A sunny day in Orlando, slightly less than warm in the strong winds: a two-hour tour of the palms and cycads of Leu Gardens conducted by the on-site palm/cycad maven, Eric Schmidt. This was the March 8th CFPACS spring meeting with 60 members and guests attending. There are 375 species of palms and 65 species of cycads in the Leu collection. Many - 125 species - have been planted in the last five years.

After lunch, the tour moved on to the second stop at the property of Pat and Gordon Smith, long-time members, whose collection dates back into the 1970s and earlier. Theirs is a favorable microclimate between canals just off Lake Maitland. What is that tall palm? Why, it's Livistona decora. I've never seen one that big, not around Orlando! Well, you just have...

The real business of the day got underway at the Smiths' with the plant auction, followed by sale of palms and cycads by the several vendors present. As always, good company (people just as crazed as yourself). (JDK)

West Coast Winter Meeting Recap (December 8)

Great meet and gardens! About 30 palmateers showed up for the Kopsick visit in the morning. Rick Nale and Phil Stager led the Kopsick tour. Lunch and auction was held at Rick Nale's in the afternoon. Many new attendees signed up for membership in the society. (DWG/JDK)
